The Mercedes-Benz SL Legend Grows

An instant style icon when it debuted in the 1950s, the Mercedes-Benz SL has been inspiring superlatives -- and envy -- ever since.
The all-new sixth-generation SL550 continues the tradition in fine form with a Benz first: a nearly all-aluminum body that adds rigidity while dropping nearly 300 pounds from the previous generation.

Still, at 3,950 pounds, the new SL is hardly light (or "leicht" -- SL stands for super-leicht). But the 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8, cranking out 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, hustles the two-seat roadster from zero to 60 in a quite respectable 4.5 seconds and keeps the "super" in SL.
Putting that power to the 19-inch tires, the über-smooth seven-speed transmission delivers a ride that is at once powerful yet graceful -- an SL hallmark. Three ride settings let drivers dial up their mood, from Comfort, to Sport (with paddle shifters on the steering wheel) to Eco, which Mercedes says will deliver 22 percent better fuel economy. The optional Active Body Control adaptive suspension levels out the ride and virtually eliminates body roll in tight corners, heavy acceleration and braking.
All-new electric power steering delivers surprisingly nice feedback.
Front-end styling is reminiscent of earlier SLs and features the big three-pointed star. Overall styling is muscular yet refined. The elegant, luxurious cabin is just the kind of place you'd like to spend time in: roomy (for a two-seater), super-comfortable seats, rich leathers and woods, LED ambient lighting, a cool logo on the steering wheel, and an audio system that features a technology called FrontBass, which uses the new aluminum construction to bounce sound around structural cavities and emerge bigger and fuller.
As is expected with an SL, goodies abound. Buyers can choose from two roof options: the standard glass roof (previously an option) or Magic Sky Control, an electrochromic glass panel that turns opaque, or any degree of shading you want, at the touch of a button.
Magic Vision Control purports to be a better way to clean the windshield by integrating washer-fluid sprayers into the blades to avoid splashing occupants when the top is down. The blades also can warm up the washer fluid before spraying an icy windshield.
Ventilated seats circulate air through tiny holes in the heat-reflecting leather to help fend off the summer sun, but it's Airscarf that's going to tickle a passenger's fancy. Vents beneath each head restraint deliver warm air to the head, neck and shoulders and warm you like a virtual scarf (thus the name) on a chilly evening. Each seat also features individual three-stage temperature control, and airflow automatically adjusts to driving speed.
Need to pop the trunk? Wave your foot under it and there she goes -- very handy when toting all those Neiman's bags.
An electronic interface called "mbrace2" lets you lock the doors with your smartphone, find your way with Google Maps and Yelp, or get help from M-B's emergency services and expert concierges.
Safety systems abound. Optional Pre-Safe is a predictive occupant-protection system that uses sensors to detect if an accident is about to occur and tightens seatbelts, adjusts seats and closes windows. Attention Assist provides audio and visual warnings if you're drowsy, while Distronic Plus adaptive cruise uses radar to keep you from plowing into the slow guy ahead. Active Lane Keeping and Blind Spot assists keep you where you belong.
Pricing starts at $105,500, which seems entirely reasonable to own a timeless piece of automotive history.

Peugeot 405

Peugeot 405 (1988-1997) - 3,461,800

The Peugeot 405 is a large family car released by the French automaker Peugeot in July 1987 and which continues to be manufactured under licence outside France. It used TU/XU petrol and XUD diesel engines. The 405 was voted European Car of the Year for 1988 by the largest number of votes in the history of the contest. About 2.5 million vehicles have been sold worldwide in left-hand and right-hand-drive versions, as a berline (saloon) and break (estate). No coupé was offered to the public, unlike the 504 and 406, as only two examples of the purpose-built 405 Turbo-16 (not to be confused with 405 T16) were made. The appearance of the car bears similarities to those of the Alfa Romeo 164, launched the same year and also styled by Pininfarina.

About 2.5 million vehicles have been sold worldwide. It slotted into the Peugeot range between the smaller 309 and the larger 505, giving it a firm rival for the Ford Sierra/Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra.[citation needed]The Samand, which was designed to be a "national car" for Iran, is also based on the 405 platform. It replaced the long-running Paykan which was itself based on the Hillman Hunter, an ancestor (in corporate ownership and model positioning terms) of the 405, having been produced by the Rootes Group and Chrysler UK from 1963 until 1979 - the year that Peugeot purchased Chrysler's European operations. The 405 was the last Peugeot vehicle sold in the US, the company withdrawing in 1991.

Peugeot 405s are popular models in Thailand, following the success of the Peugeot 505 after the Thai government cancelled a restriction on CBU car imports in the late-1980s. The 405 was available in GR and SR forms with 1.6 or 2.0-litre petrol engines, MI16 models being introduced in the mid-1990s alongside injection models after the government's announcement that all cars required a Catalytic Converter from 1993.

It has been available in left-hand and right-hand-drive versions, as a saloon and estate, in front-wheel, and four-wheel drive. Designed by Pininfarina, the 405 shares its platform with the Citroën BX that appeared in 1982, although the physical appearance of the two cars is very different.

Iranian variants

Iran Khodro also produces several models derived from the 405. The Peugeot Pars, also known as the Peugeot Persia, is a facelifted 405 with a redesigned front end including clear lamp lenses and a revised rear. The Peugeot RD is a rear wheel drive car which has a 405 body and mechanical parts from the Paykan. Since 2006, it has been sold in certain Middle Eastern markets as the Peugeot
ROA.

The Samand

The Samand, which was designed to be a "national car" for Iran, is also based on the 405 platform.

Peugeot Pars

The Peugeot Pars (Persian: پژو پارس‎) also known as Peugeot Persia is an Iran Khodro product. After 10 years of manufacturing Peugeot 405 in Iran Khodro company, Peugeot Persia was designed as a facelift of the 405. Peugeot Persia was soon renamed to Peugeot Pars because of local copyright problems. Peugeot Pars had been made in 3 models Pars, Pars 16V, and Pars ELX. The 16V and ELX models use a more powerful PSA 16 valve engine and a few extra facilities.

The Paykan

The Paykan (Persian: پيکان‎) was an automobile produced by the Iranian company Iran Khodro (formerly called "Iran National") Industrial Group. The car was very popular in Iran from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. It is often referred as the Iranian "chariot". The Paykan design was based on the 1967 Hillman Hunter, which was originally designed and manufactured by the British Rootes Group. The design was introduced to Iran by Mahmoud Khayami, co-founder and, by then, owner of the Iran Khodro (formerly called "Iran National") company and factory, who accurately predicted that Iran was in need of a simple "no-frills" automobile within the price range of ordinary people

 Peugeot ROA

The Peugeot ROA is an Iranian made car (by Iran Khodro Co). It is a developed version of the Peugeot RD 1600. The car is a combination of Paykan and Peugeot 405. Upon first glance it may easily be mistaken for a Peugeot 405. However the engine and chassis are completely different as it is developed on the Paykan's chassis, and despite having a body based on the Peugeot 405 it is a rear-wheel-drive car.

Willys - Overland Jeep

Willys-Overland Jeep (1945) The civilian version of the US Army vehicle, the father of all off-roaders.

The Willys MB US Army Jeep (formally the Truck, 1/4 ton, 4x4) and the Ford GPW were manufactured from 1941 to 1945. These small four-wheel drive utility vehicles are considered the iconic World War II
Jeep, and inspired many similar light utility vehicles.

Over the years, the World War II Jeep later evolved into the "CJ" civilian Jeep. Its counterpart in the German army was the Volkswagen Kübelwagen, also based on a small automobile, but which used an air-cooled
engine and lacked 4 wheel drive.

Peugeot Typ 10

The Peugeot Type 10 was a 5-seater closed-top car (body style similar to that of an estate car) produced from 1894 to 1896 by Peugeot. The engine was a V-twin that displaced 1645 cc.
